the surrounding built environment [although static] varies
from building to building. I was looking more specifically
at the street walls along washington street in addition
to the varying heights of the buildings located in the area.
for the thesis I think that it is necessary to understand how
the buildings in the area remain static, so I can begin to
produce the manipulations that will not only occur on the
interior of my housing project, but also on the facade of
the building. the manipulations will be able to occur
with the walls, ceilings, floors, the alterations of natural
light, how much is revealed or hidden from the public view,
how the space can be altered for different groups of people,
whether there is outdoor space that can become interior
[or vice versa], how the space can accommodate families
that are growing or if a person has guests that will be
staying for a short stay.
this analysis is displaying how the building heights
of the surrounding urban context are altered as the
ground plane is shifted. I was looking to see how
much change occurs and what similarities of
building heights there are in the area.
along Washington Street and was analyzing
the varying levels of transparency of the facade
and how it transforms up and down the street.
in addition, it allowed me to see how the heights
of the buildings change in elevation.
this analysis was looking at the other street face
that my site is located on. I wanted to understand
the solidity and translucency of major facade
elements along the street and extract the major
features that create the facade, whether they
were completely opaque or transparent.
this model was a RE--PRESENTATION of the
the site and for this I manipulated the existing
facades of the buildings. I shifted the facades
on the model based on whether they were more
solid or transparent. the solid elements remain
rooted along the street and then the more
transparency that was shown was pushed to
the outer portions of the model. the shift of
the transparent layers was based on how far
I could see into the building, thus the distance
that they would be pushed back.
